Wildfire continues to be a significant and serious threat to life and property in Travis County. Increasingly severe impacts of climate change have led to long-term drought conditions, extreme heat, flammable vegetation, and unpredictable weather events. Central Texas is only second to California for the greatest risk of wildfire.
Areas like Travis County, where large growing populations of flammable homes are mixed with sizeable areas of dry and flammable vegetation, are at the highest risk for wildfires due to the close proximity of wildland fuels and the increased number of human-caused ignitions.
The risk of wildfires is growing exponentially. Wildfires are dangerous and can threaten lives, homes, communities, and natural treasures. Every step we take now to prevent and prepare for wildfires could save lives and properties in Travis County if and when the next emergency strikes.
